What is CMM inspection?
CMM stands for coordinate measuring machine — a precision instrument that measures a part's real geometry in three dimensions. Rather than checking a few features with hand tools, a CMM probes defined points across the part and calculates the actual sizes, positions and forms of its features, comparing them against the CAD model or drawing.
How does a CMM verify a part?
The process is methodical:
- The part is fixtured on the machine bed.
- A probe touches a programmed set of points on each feature.
- The CMM computes the measured dimensions, true position and form.
- It reports them against the drawing tolerances — with the actual values, not just pass or fail.
That record is repeatable: run the same part again and you get the same, evidenced result.
